Technologies

Advances in solar technology have made it possible to generate electricity in various sectors, from off-grid systems for remote residences to rooftop solar installations for industrial companies. Solar farms, such as those part of the REIPPP Programme, will typically use one of the following technologies to generate energy from the sun’s rays.

Photovoltaic (PV)

  • Most common and widely used globally
  • Proven and reputable technology
  • Easy design and sizes range from kilowatts to megawatts
  • Fixed and tracking options that optimise yield
  • Operation and maintenance cost is low

Concentrating Photo Voltaic (CPV)

  • New technology compared to PV
  • Works best in areas with high direct radiation (not diffused)
  • Most promising solar technology regarding efficiency increase
  • Limited number of plants constructed
  • High accuracy dual axis trackers units are required

Concetrated Solar Power (CSP)

  • Requires considerable amounts of water to operate
  • Economies of scales are key to increase viability, typically >50 MW
  • Very specialised technology, limited companies with experience
  • Ability to generate electricity during night-hours
  • Different types, e.g. centralised tower and parabolic trough
